We live in a world obsessed with speed and scale. But what actually sustains us? Relationships. Do you invest in relationships?
I believe it’s essential—not just in personal life, but in business life.
Here’s why:
We live in a world that celebrates speed, efficiency, and scale. Businesses are rewarded for quarterly results and people are praised for productivity hacks and task completion. But in all that urgency, one of the most important elements of success—relationships—can easily get lost in the shuffle.
Cultivating relationships is not about collecting contacts, exchanging business cards, or growing your LinkedIn network. It is about building real connections rooted in trust, respect, and mutual value. And the truth is, relationships are what sustain us through both the predictable rhythms and the unpredictable disruptions of life and leadership.
This has been my experience: when I’ve failed (as all humans eventually do) the colleagues and clients with whom I’ve had a relationship have responded with understanding and grace. Because they trust my intent to do the right thing, they’ve granted me a moment to learn from the mistake and move on. And when someone fails me, having a history with them gives me the context I need to respond appropriately. Usually, I want to help them learn and grow and build a reciprocal, valuable relationship. Conversely, if the relationship is strictly transactional, I will look around for a better source.
In the age of AI and data-based decision making, which are both analytical in nature, how might the nature of relationships evolve? Do they become less important … or essential?
Stay tuned.
