Periodically, especially when I need an antidote to the headlines, I reflect on certain people I hold in the highest regard. These people aren’t related to me and don’t owe me anything, but they have enriched my life in countless ways. Respect isn’t a strong enough word; I love these people.
So, I decided to document a few, starting with Don and Bev Freeman.
I love the Freemans.
Don Freeman built up his father’s company into the juggernaut it is today. He did it not just by being a shrewd businessperson, but by staying true to his infallible sense of right and wrong. And for 65 years (and counting), he has been able to rely on his confidant, sounding board, and advocate, Bev, to help keep the ship on course.
Social media mavens like to follow power couples. I prefer selfless “empower couples” like Don and Bev. Their number one concern, in good times and bad, is to do the right thing by both employees and customers. They leaned into their Midwest values, personal discipline, and a genuine regard for human beings—things that have served them well over the years. And the trust, regard, collaboration, and prosperity they engendered have served thousands and thousands of others.
I’m one. And that’s only part of why I love Don and Bev Freeman.
